Lock or Freeze Your Credit
If you believe your personal information may be compromised, placing a credit freeze (also called a security freeze) can help prevent new accounts from being opened in your name.
A credit freeze restricts access to your credit report, making it harder for identity thieves to open new lines of credit. It does not affect your credit score and can be lifted at any time when you need to apply for credit.
How to Freeze Your Credit
You will need to contact each of the three major credit bureaus individually:
- Equifax:
Place or manage a credit freeze with Equifax - Experian:
Place or manage a credit freeze with Experian - TransUnion:
Place or manage a credit freeze with TransUnion
Additional Tips
- Keep your PINs or passwords for each bureau in a safe place
- Consider placing a fraud alert if you’re not ready to fully freeze your credit
